The big decision from Facebook’s Oversight Board came down this morning, regarding Donald Trump’s Facebook and Instagram accounts. And it decided to uphold the decision to suspend the accounts. But there is an asterisk there. The Oversight Board states that it “was not appropriate for Facebook to impose the indeterminate and standardless penalty of indefinite suspension.”

The board goes on to say that “Facebook’s normal penalties include removing the violating content, imposing a time-bound period of suspension, or permanently disabling the page and account.” It also wants Facebook to review the account and justify a “proportionate response that is consistent with the rules that are applied to all users of its platform.”

Basically, the board agrees that his account should be suspended, but not suspended indefinitely.

The Oversight Board has also indicated that it has made some policy recommendations to Facebook. As it wants Facebook to develop “clear, necessary and proportionate policies that promote public safety and respect freedom of expression.” So there will likely be some new changes coming to Facebook and its policies in the near future.

Facebook banned Trump after the January 6 insurrection

Facebook, along with many other platforms, banned Trump after the insurrection on January 6. As these were platforms that he was using to rile up his base and send them to the Capitol for this insurrection.

While Facebook enlisted an Oversight Board to see if the decision was the right decision, other platforms have decided to keep the suspension intact. For instance, Twitter’s CFO has said in numerous interviews since Trump became a former-president, that they have no intentions to remove his suspension.

So it appears that Trump have to continue sending out “Tweets” as press releases, since he is banned from just about every social media network on the planet right now. And you can guarantee that he will be sending out a press release at some point today after this decision was made.
