Instagram Lite is not exactly a new app, but it’s now widening its horizons by going global. The app is launching in over 170 countries. Until now, Instagram Lite was exclusive to India.

As its name says, this app is aiming to require less system resources in order to run. It’s a stripped-down version of the main application, but the main features are still here. Truth be said, this version of the app will probably satisfy most consumers.

Instagram basically packed a web wrapper inside an app, and gave it some extra features. Instagram offers some extra tools for uploading and viewing here, compared to a web version.

Instagram Lite goes global following exclusivity to India

This app launched in India first, as it doesn’t really require a lot of data in order to run properly. Instagram also wanted to polish it out before pushing it to more markets. It seems like the app is up to par now.

You’re probably wondering what’s missing here. Well, AR filters are not a part of the experience, and the same goes for animations. Some UI transitions have also been removed compared to the main app.

What are you getting in return? An extremely fluid app that doesn’t require much power, and which weighs only 3MB. That means it’s approximately 90-percent smaller compared to the main app.

The core features are all here, basically. That includes photo filters, messaging, Stories, and even video messaging is included. Instagram really managed to trim down the fat by removing a couple of features.

The scrolling is not as smooth as you'd expect

Do note that if you’re coming from the main app, you may notice less fluid scrolling. It may feel a bit laggy. This is a basic version of the app, and many fancy additions have been removed. Still, the performance should be smoother.

It was also mentioned that the dark mode is coming, as it’s not available at the moment. It will offer a black background with gray text on top of it.

Those of you who want to try this app out, you’re free to do so. Do note that the app may not be available in your region just yet, as it was said it may take a while, but the rollout has started.
