Former Nokia and Apple imaging expert Ari Partinen has joined the Microsoft Surface team. Partinen, who has years of expertise in the mobile camera industry, will work as the Director of Imaging at Microsoft. He announced his move to the Windows giant on Twitter as well as on LinkedIn.
First day in Microsoft Surface imaging team. Very exciting times ahead! #Microsoft #Surface
— Ari Partinen (@Partinen) March 1, 2021
Partinen worked for Nokia between 2007 to 2014 in various positions. He joined the Finnish company as an Image Quality engineer and was working as the Lumia Photography Lead when he left for Apple in June 2014. During his time at Nokia, Partinen oversaw the company launching the Nokia 808 PureView as well as the Lumia 1020, two of the best camera phones of that time.
At Apple, Partinen worked as a Senior Imaging engineer until October 2015. He was responsible for managing image quality verification and test algorithm development activities. He then worked for the Cupertino giant as a Senior Manager of camera validation and testing until December 2018.
Since leaving Apple, Partinen has been working as a Senior Manager of image quality and testing at AAC Technologies. Based in Shenzhen, China, AAC Technologies is an electrical and electronic manufacturing company.
The Microsoft Surface Duo was one of the most innovative smartphones to come out in 2020. The folding dual-screen phone, which also happens to be the Windows giant's first Android device, opens up new possibilities in mobile productivity.
However, the device arrived with some major flaws most of us could not look beyond. Among other things, the $1,399-priced Surface Duo only had one camera sensor. The 11-megapixel front-facing camera did not offer OIS (Optical Image Stabilization) and produced images that do not do justice to the device's stature as a premium phone.
As we reported earlier this week, Microsoft is seemingly itching to get things right with the second-gen Duo. And Ari Partinen might be the man to do the job for the company.
It's unclear if Partinen would be working specifically on the Duo lineup or other Surface products as well. In his LinkedIn post announcing his move to Microsoft, he simply said that he is joining the Microsoft Surface team in the role of Director of Imaging. And since Microsoft also makes Surface-branded laptops, he might be responsible for the development of imaging technologies for other Surface products as well.
Nonetheless, Microsoft has reportedly already started working on the Surface Duo 2 (name not official). It seems the company is prioritizing the camera performance on the second-gen Duo. The device may arrive in late 2021 or early 2022.
