Qualcomm isn't exactly the brand you think of in regards to a gaming console. It seems though that Qualcomm fancies itself a company that is more than capable of producing a gaming console and then selling it to consumers.

According to a new report from Android Police, Qualcomm has plans to do just that. The company best known for supplying many different hardware manufacturers in the mobile space with System On Chips, may be getting its start in console hardware soon.

Unlike past Qualcomm hardware endeavors, this doesn't appear to be a reference device that it can sell to OEMs to use. Though Qualcomm would not confirm the rumor, a "source familiar with the company's strategy" suggests it will be a direct to consumer product.

The gaming console from Qualcomm very much resembles a Nintendo Switch

Unfortunately there are as of yet, no images that have been shared that showcase the design of this device. However Android Police does note that they've non-final designs of the console.

It's reported as resembling a Nintendo Switch, complete with detachable left and right Joy-Con style controllers, and a display in the middle. It's also said to come with a 6,000mAh battery. And it'll have Qualcomm's QuickCharge technology inside so it can charge back up as fast as possible.

For comparison, the actual Nintendo Switch has a 4,310mAh battery. So at the very least Qualcomm is intent on delivering something that lasts longer on a single charge. Yet can replenish that battery power rapidly when the need arises.

There's no mention of the display size, but it's unlikely to be any smaller than what the Switch offers.

Qualcomm isn't trying to take on Nintendo

Surprisingly enough, Qualcomm isn't trying to take on Nintendo. Far from it, it seems. Instead, Qualcomm's vision for this console is reportedly to help motivate partners to explore new design choices for future hardware.

The console runs on Android 12

Qualcomm's vision for gaming success includes the Android 12 operating system. Complete with the capability to link the console up with your TV.

The hardware is said to include an SD card reader for added storage, however no internal storage amounts were mentioned. Qualcomm also wants to have the Epic Game Store present on the console at launch. Which is targeted for the first quarter of 2022.

That puts a little under a year between now and when Qualcomm wants to get this thing to market. And that leaves a lot of time for things to veer off course.
