After paying “significantly less than $100 million” for the Quibi library, Roku is going to launch those shows as Roku Originals. Along with a number of other shows that they are currently working on.

The Quibi shows will be available on the Roku Channel starting today. And will join the over 25,000 movies and TV shows already available on the Roku Channel.

We have seen earlier reports that Roku was looking for an original content team, and this pretty much confirms it.

Quibi content is going to be a huge question for Roku Originals though. Quibi failed for a reason, partly because it was available in portrait mode and only available on mobile devices. But that doesn’t meant that the same content will be successful on Roku’s platform. Considering Quibi launched a little over a year ago, so the failure isn’t all that old at this point.

Roku’s VP of Engagement Growth Marking, Sweta Patel stated, “We’re thrilled to introduce this award-winning and diverse portfolio of entertainment under the Roku Originals brand – it’s relevant, fun and thought-provoking TV that has something for everyone from the best talent in Hollywood, including Anna Kendrick, Chrissy Teigen, Lena Waithe, Idris Elba, Kevin Hart, and Liam Hemsworth. The Roku Channel is the place for incredible, free programming and we are excited to bring this premium content to the biggest screen in the home.”

Roku is continuing to make the Roku Channel more competitive

Roku launched the Roku Channel a couple of years ago as a way to provide more free content and make more money off of ads. Since most people don’t buy a new Roku device every year. In fact, it’s about once every five years or even longer. And Roku hardware is sold at cost, and in some cases, at a loss. So ads is where Roku is going to make its money.

And the Roku Channel is going to be how it competes with the Fire TV, Android TV and Apple TV though.
