Twitter is finally letting users tweet and view higher-resolution images on mobile apps. A server-side update on Android and iOS Twitter apps now allows users to upload as well as view up to 4K resolution images on the platform.

You can enable the feature by navigating to the “Data usage” section of the Settings menu in the Twitter app. You can then select when to upload higher-resolution images – on Wi-Fi network only, on both Wi-Fi and cellular data, or never. It’s set to “never” by default so you don’t unknowingly end up wasting your limited cellular data on uploading 4K images on Twitter.

The same three options are also available for viewing higher-resolution images. However, it’s set to “both mobile data and Wi-Fi” by default. So if you’re on a limited data plan, you might want to change this setting to Wi-Fim only or never. This setting lets you select when the Twitter app will automatically load 4K images.

Below these two settings, you will find similar options for uploading and viewing high-quality videos. Unfortunately, though, Twitter isn’t doing anything yet to improve the abysmal video quality on the app. It uses extremely aggressive compression for videos and the resolution tops out at just 720p. Now that it has fixed the low-resolution picture problem on mobile apps, we hope the company is working to improve video quality as well.

Twitter finally fixes its low-res images problem on mobile apps

Twitter long supported uploading and viewing of higher-resolution images (up to 4096 x 4096 resolution) on the web version. Uploads from mobile apps, on the other hand, topped out at 2048 x 2048 resolution. The company started testing this 4K image upload option on mobile apps among a small group of users last month. Now, a month later, it is rolling out the feature to all users.

Twitter had last month also announced that it has started testing another new feature where it would not crop out images on the timeline. “How the image appears in the Tweet composer is how it will look on the timeline – bigger and better,” the company said. This feature is seemingly still in testing among a select few Android and iOS app users. It should roll out to more users in the coming weeks.

Moreover, Twitter is also testing a way to let users watch YouTube videos directly on the timeline. Users don’t need to leave the platform to watch YouTube videos. This feature should also roll out to users widely in the future. Twitter says all these changes are part of a broader push “to improve how you can share and view media” on the platform.
