Huawei has just shown developers how they can easily turn GMS apps into HMS apps. As most of you know, Huawei is no longer allowed to use Google services, and thus can’t offer the Play Store to its users. They can use AppGallery, Huawei’s very own store.
That created issues for quite a few users, as they were unable to install the apps that they wanted. Huawei has been working long and hard on a solution, and there are several. Well, this new one makes things even simpler, even though it doesn’t come straight from Huawei.
One of Huawei’s European partners, bluesource, has released a solution that adapts GMS to HMS apps. That was done specifically for a top bank in Austria, the Raiffeisen Bank. The solution became quite popular, and is now open-source. Therefore, it can be used by anyone. Huawei says that over 60 brands have used it by now.
This solution is called “Choice SDK”, and it makes it easy for publishers to transform their existing apps based on GMS and Firebase frameworks, into HMS usable applications.
This will save developers not only time, but also the cost of converting apps to HMS-compatible ones. Huawei is hoping that this will boost its HMS ecosystem even more.
Speaking of which, AppGallery grew immensely since its launch. It became the world’s third-largest app marketplace with 530 million monthly active users (MAUs). It grew in Europe by 61.5-percent YoY, to more than 42 million users.
The platform has also seen a surge when it comes to registered developers, those numbers rose to 2.3 million. That means that they are 77-percent higher than they were last year. We’re looking at 300,000 developers outside of China.
It remains to be seen how useful “Choice SDK” will be, and how many companies will use it. There are still tons of Huawei devices out there, and its AppGallery is growing extremely fast. It’s quite appealing to developers, and this could give them a really easy way to take advantage of the ecosystem.
